Review: A Court of Frost and Starlight
I was soooo excited for A Court of Frost and Starlight. I went into this short book (or novella, whatever you wanna call it) expecting it to be a fan service, and I wasn’t surprised. While nothing really goes on my way of plot, this book is still a must-read for superfans of the series. However, if you skip it, you’re not missing that much.
Fan Service
While ACOFAS apparently was published to bridge the gaps between ACOWAR and the next book, I think it’s safe to say that it’s just a fan service – a short novella with some fun scenes and background info. We get a steamy Feysand scene (which I loved) and some funny, and also sweet, background information on the Inner Circle. It also introduces us to other points of view. Only Feyre and Rhys are in first person, but we get to see Mor, Cassian, and Nesta, too!
Slut Shaming
I’ve seen some fans claim that they found the book to be slut shaming at times. To which I’d like to say… I don’t think so. Nesta is undergoing a period of grief and depression. Her loved ones never call her a slut or a bad person for sleeping around. Everyone is concerned for her, because her behavior is not healthy or common FOR HER.
As someone who has been depressed, I do filled my void with partying. I’ve had friends do the same with sex. Filling a void in this way is never healthy. Having lots of sex is perfectly healthy in some situations, but not in one em this, and I think Feyre knows this.
I especially loved how Cassian dealt with it in the preview for the next book. Nesta, who has always cared about aesthetics, is obviously not herself. Despite his jealousy, Cassian doesn’t say she’s immoral for sleeping around – just a little unhygienic for not washing those sheets!
The Next Book
The best part of ACOFAS is plainly the excerpt at the end. SJM shows us a sneak peak of her next ACOTAR book! The first few chapters are from Cassian and Nesta’s point of view, and OMG, are they exciting or are they exciting? I am so excited to see what the next book brings and hope it’s a happy ending for my baes. All in all, I’m giving ACOFAS four stars for 1) A steamy Feysand scene 2) A beautiful tapestry made from magical thread 3) Cute backstory on Rhys’s mom and 4) How excited this book made me for the next installment!
