Holy crapoli. I’m obsessed. Ditching Mr. Darcy is a self-published, 110% awesome work. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but that doesn’t matter. IT’S PERFECT TO ME. If you love Pride and Prejudice, then you absolutely have to check out this fun adaptation!
Let me just dive into it.
Premise: Elizabeth Baker is, well, me. She’s twenty-seven. (Okay, I’m twenty-eight. Whatever.) She grew up outside of Philly. She’s obsessed with Pride and Prejudice and in love with Mr. Darcy. She loves the Phillies and does not understand anyone who hates baseball. She’s really non-committal because she compares men to her favorite romantic hero. She thinks the movie version or Pride and Prejudice is better than the miniseries for all of the same reasons I do, even though almost everyone on Earth disagrees with her. And she loves Colin Firth in Kingsman. Like I said, we are one in the same.
But when Elizabeth gets into a car accident that knocks her unconscious is when the real magic happens. She’s thrown into her favorite novel as Elizabeth Bennet. People from her real life fill in the cast of characters. And then the weirdest thing of all happens. Despite spending years obsessing over Mr. Darcy, she meets him but falls in love with someone else entirely.
With a fun cast of characters that are familiar and yet totally unique and the sweetest, funniest, dreamiest, most playful love interest of all time – IMMA LET YOU FINISH BUT, OF ALL TIME – Ditching Mr. Darcy is my favorite “modern girl gets thrown into Jane Austen’s world” adaptation ever. And I cannot wait to read the sequel, Becoming Mr. Bingley!

Ditching Mr. Darcy by Samantha Whitman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I had a smile on my face the entire time I read this – except for the two moments I cried. The main character is ME. Elizabeth grew up outside of Philly, is in love with Mr. Darcy and the Phillies, loves wine, is ridiculously non-committal with men, thinks the movie of Pride and Prejudice is better than the miniseries, AND thinks Colin Firth’s best role is in Kingsman. Pair the similarities with an awesome cast of characters that are all Samantha Whitman’s own unique twist on Pride and Prejudice characters and the dreamiest, most FUN love interest of all time, and you’ve got a winner. This book is self-published and super awesome. Can’t wait to read the next one.
