I used to read web comics a lot when I was in college. About a year ago, I binge-read Lore Olympus, a comic on the Webtoon app, and then became a loyal reader of updates, buying coins for fast passes on the regular. Lore Olympus went on hiatus a few months ago, but Season 2 starts this weekend, and I am so excited.

The summary:

Witness what the gods do…after dark. The friendships and the lies, the gossip and the wild parties, and of course, forbidden love. Because it turns out, the gods aren’t so different from us after all, especially when it comes to their problems. Stylish and immersive, this is one of mythology’s greatest stories — The Taking of Persephone — as it’s never been told before.

Chapter 53 preview #loreolympus #webtoon

Lore Olympus is the story of Hades and Persephone. This weekend, I reread Season 1 in preparation for Season 2’s start this weekend. This is a lovely, semi-modern retelling with all of the Greek gods and goddesses (and demigods and more) I know and love. The sexual and romantic tension between these two is killer from the start. This adaptation, masterfully crafted by Rachel Smythe, isn’t only romantic and fun, but also deals with tough topics like sexual assault, abusive relationships, and gaslighting.

Chapter 79 preview #loreolympus

The artwork is gorgeous, both cartoony and a little realistic. I love the Underworld scenes the most. I also love how in the world of the gods, the characters wear modern clothing and use technology. When they visit the mortal realm, they’re in classical Greece.

I do consider reading graphic novels to be reading, but I did not count this one on my Goodreads as it’s a little hard to track what a “book” is. I suppose I could count Season 1, which took me last weekend to reread, as a book. However, then when I’m reading Season 2, it will take me months to finish, and I feel a reread is always necessary once all of the episodes are up to make things more cohesive.

I absolutely can’t wait for Season 2! If you like Greek mythology and graphic novels, I really recommend reading this comic. And if comics aren’t your style but you enjoy cartoons, keep on the lookout. The Jim Henson Company has partnered with Webtoon and it looks like an animated series is in the works.
