Katie the Catsitter by Coleen AF Venable is a fun graphic novel about Katie, a girl who needs to make some extra money. She lives in a NYC out of the movies, full of rather silly superheroes – and supervillains. This book was a ton of fun for me to read and I can really see the kid appeal for children of all ages.

The summary, from Amazon:

Calling all Raina Telgemeier fans! Introducing an irresistible new middle-grade graphic novel series about growing up, friendship, heroes, and cats (lots of cats!)–perfect for fans of GutsAwkward and Real Friends (not to mention anyone who loves cats!)

Katie is dreading the boring summer ahead while her best friends are all away at camp–something that’s way out of Katie and her mom’s budget, UNLESS Katie can figure out a way to earn the money for camp herself. But when Katie gets a job catsitting for her mysterious upstairs neighbor, life get interesting. First, Madeline has 217 cats (!) and they’re not exactly . . . normal cats. Also, why is Madeline always out EXACTLY when the city’s most notorious villain commits crimes?! Is it possible that Katie’s upstairs neighbor is really a super villain? Can Katie wrangle a whole lot of wayward cats, save a best friendship (why is Beth barely writing back? And who’s this boy she keeps talking about?!), AND crack the biggest story in the city’s history? Some heroes have capes . . . Katie has cats!

When Katie’s mother can’t afford to send her to summer camp, Katie doesn’t want to rely on the handouts of her friends’ parents. Instead, she decides to put herself to work so she can at least join them for a week this year. Eventually, she lands a gig catsitting for her mysterious neighbor Madeline. But Madeline doesn’t just have one cat, or two, or ten. She has 217. And each has its own unique skills. The cats put Katie through hell each night, but soon she figures if you can’t beat them, join them. Katie befriends the cats, all while wondering if the city’s most notorious supervillian. the Mousetress, is, in fact, Madeline.

This was such a fun read. I liked that Katie wanted to earn the money herself and that she was a vegetarian (who perhaps does not eat enough vegetables). I also loved the cats and would like to see more books in this series. I’m sure Katie, the cats, and the Mousetress can get up to some more shenanigans to ensure the welfare of all animals!
